Abrasives:

Abrasives are available in different grain sizes according to respective mesh / sieve size and standards. The selection of abrasive and a particular mesh size depends upon the process requirement, substrate hardness, surface finish required after blast cleaning, and upon post blasting application.

A few abrasives available and their application is listed here below:

Chilled Iron Grit : Mesh Size : 8 - 120;  Size (mm) : 2.0 - 0.09

Hard, dense, angular shape, lower breakage, produces low dust, longer recycle life, low cost Ideally suited for fast cleaning of heavy contamination on ferrous castings, forgings, fabricated parts, pipes. Not recommended on non ferrous components as surface blasted is iron contaminated.

Steel Grit :  Mesh size : 12 - 52;  Size (mm) : 1.4 - 0.30

Hard, dense, angular shape, lower breakage, produces low dust, longer recycle life, moderate cost Suitable for obtaining consistent surface roughness on ferrous castings, fabricated parts, steel rolls. Not suitable on non ferrous parts like aluminum, brass, wood, plastic

Child Iron Shots : Mesh size : 8 - 52;  Size (mm) : 2.0 - 0.30

Hard, dense, spherical shape, lower breakage, produces low dust, longer recycle life, low cost General purpose cleaning, descaling, deburring, deflashing, shot peening on components of iron and steel. Can be used for commercial cleaning on castings of aluminum, zinc.

Austenitinic, dense, Spherical shape, lower breakage, produces least dust, longest recycle life, high cost Special purpose cleaning, descaling, deburring, deflashing, finishing, shot peening on ferrous and non ferrous components without fear of iron contaminants on treated surface

Steel Cut Wire : Size : CW 54 - 12;   Size (mm) : 1.4 - 0.30

Hard, dense, pellet shape, lower breakage, produces low dust, longer recycle life, moderate cost General purpose cleaning, descaling, deburring, deflashing, shot peening on components of iron and steel. Can be used for commercial cleaning on casting of aluminum, zinc.

Aluminum Oxide:  Mesh size : 12 - 240;   Size (mm) : 1.4 - 0.06

Hard, brittle, angular shape, high breakage, produces moderate dust, low recycle life, low cost Suitable for both dry and wet blasting at faster rate. Recommended for both ferrous and non ferrous components without fear of iron contaminants on treated parts.

Silicon Carbide: Mesh size : 12 - 240;   Size (mm) : 1.4 - 0.06

Hard, brittle, angular shape, high breakage, produces moderate dust, low recycle life, low cost Suitable for both dry and wet blasting at faster rate. Recommended for hardened components of steel and alloys. Not recommended for parts of aluminum, zinc, brass.

Glass Beads : Mesh size : 18 - 350;  Size (mm) : 0.85 - 0.04

Hard, spherical shape, low breakage, produces lowest dust, long recycle life, high cost Suitable for both dry and wet process to gently clean, descale, deflash, deburr or shot peen at low intensity on parts of SS, alloy steel where material removal allowed is negligible.

Plastic Grit-Acrylic & Urea : Mesh size : 18 - 36;   Size (mm) : 0.85 - 0.42

Soft, low density, angular shape, lowest breakage, produces lowest dust, longer recycle life, high cost suitable for precise descaling, deflashing, deburring, shining or removal of old pain, varnish etc. from precision components while keeping the dimensional tolerances and finis intact.

Walnut Shell : Mesh size : 18 - 36;   Size (mm) : 0.85 - 0.42

Soft, low density, angular shape, lowest breakage, produces low dust, long recycle life, high cost Suitable for precise descaling, deflashing, deburring, shining or removal of old paint, varnish etc. from precision components while keeping the dimensional tolerances and finish intact.

Ceramic Beads : Mesh size : 16 - 70;   Size (mm) : 1.18 - 0.21

Hard, spherical shape, low breakage, produces lowest dust, long recycle life, high cost Especially adopted for hot peening and peen forming applications which require improved spherically and narrow size distributions.
